Driving IP Knowledge in the Mobile App Industry

Empowering You with IP Knowledge!

In a bid to empower local software developers and content creators, the Ministry of Digital Transformation (MDT) proudly participated in the “National Workshop on Intellectual Property and Mobile Applications: Business and Legal Issues.” Hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office of Trinidad and Tobago, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Ministry of Legal Affairs, this workshop aimed to shed light on the crucial role of intellectual property (IP) rights in the mobile app industry.

Promoting IP Awareness

Mr. Cory Belfon, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted the importance of protecting IP rights for local innovators, particularly within the vibrant community of Developers’ Hub (D’Hub). Recognizing the significance of IP in fostering innovation and safeguarding creators’ rights, the workshop served as a platform for industry experts to impart valuable knowledge to participants.

Enhancing Skillsets and Tools

Led by industry experts, the workshop delved into various aspects of IP rights in app innovation and development. Members of the D’Hub community had the opportunity to broaden their skillsets beyond technical expertise, transitioning into savvy business owners well-versed in IP protection strategies.

As a result of this collaborative effort, valuable resources such as the “WIPO Tool on the Financing of Intellectual Property-Based Mobile Apps” and “Handbook on Key Contracts for Mobile Applications” have been made available online. These tools aim to assist local app developers in navigating the complexities of IP rights and contractual agreements, thus empowering them to thrive in the competitive mobile app industry.

Through initiatives like the National Workshop on Intellectual Property and Mobile Applications, the Ministry of Digital Transformation is committed to shaping the future of the mobile app industry in Trinidad and Tobago. By fostering a culture of innovation, knowledge-sharing, and IP protection, we aim to propel local app developers to new heights of success on the global stage.
